The Zambian Government has signed an implementation agreement for the 16 MW Northrise Solar Photovoltaic power project in Twapia, Ndola, marking a further step in the country’s efforts to expand electricity generation capacity and attract private sector investment into renewable energy.
The project is being developed by Lifesong for Orphans Zambia Limited and is expected to enter commercial operation in July 2026 following the completion of construction activities.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary for Electricity, Arnold Simwaba, said the agreement demonstrates the Government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for independent power producers and increasing private sector participation in Zambia’s energy sector.
He noted that the agreement provides development rights for the project while establishing a clear framework for risk allocation between the Government and the developer. The arrangement is expected to enhance investor confidence and support the successful delivery of energy infrastructure projects.
The Northrise Solar PV project aligns with Zambia’s Vision 2030 objective of achieving universal access to electricity while increasing the share of renewable energy within the country’s power generation mix.
Lifesong Zambia Country Director Dennis Delic welcomed the signing of the agreement and praised the Government’s ongoing reforms aimed at facilitating greater private sector involvement in the energy industry.
Delic revealed that more than US$12 million has already been invested in the project as part of Phase One of a broader development programme. He added that the company plans to develop an additional 35 MW in Phase Two, substantially increasing the facility’s contribution to the national grid.
He said the company was proud to support Zambia’s energy sector growth through the delivery of clean and sustainable power generation capacity.
The project comes at a time when Zambia is accelerating investment in alternative energy sources to complement hydropower generation and improve resilience against climate related challenges that have affected electricity production in recent years.
Once operational, the Northrise Solar PV project is expected to contribute to a more diversified, reliable and sustainable electricity sector capable of supporting economic growth, job creation and long term national development.
