Mpatamanga Hydropower Project seeks river gauging specialists for Shire River monitoring programme

Mpatamanga Hydro Power Limited (MHPL) has issued a Request for Expression of Interest (EOI) for specialist river gauging services along the Shire River in support of the Mpatamanga Hydropower Storage Project (MHSP) in southern Malawi.

The project is located on the lower Shire River between the existing Tedzani and Kapichira hydropower schemes, spanning the Blantyre and Neno districts approximately 50 km from Blantyre.

Once completed, the hydropower facility will deliver a total contractual generation capacity of 356 MW, comprising a 300 MW peaking power plant and a 56 MW baseload facility located approximately 6 km downstream.

MHPL is seeking a qualified service provider to undertake regular river discharge measurements at three hydrological monitoring stations along the Shire River. The programme is designed to calibrate and update rating curves and improve the accuracy and reliability of flow data used for project design, operational planning and hydrological assessments.

Under the scope of work, the selected contractor will carry out monthly discharge measurements at each of the three hydrological stations throughout the year, covering both the dry season from April to November and the wet season from December to March.

In addition to scheduled monitoring, the contractor will be required to undertake event based gauging during flood events and periods of high river flow. These measurements must be conducted as soon as safely practicable following notification by MHPL.

Given the dynamic riverbed conditions caused by sediment movement, all discharge measurements will be undertaken using Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) technology linked to GPS equipment or an equivalent approved solution. The measurements must comply with internationally recognised hydrometric standards and industry best practice.

Interested companies are invited to submit Expressions of Interest no later than 10 July 2026 at 4pm Malawi time.
