Seriti Green commits R25 billion to accelerate Mpumalanga’s clean energy transition

At the 6th South Africa Investment Conference held on 31 March 2026 in Sandton, Seriti Green confirmed a total investment of R25 billion into renewable energy infrastructure in Mpumalanga, signalling a major shift in the province’s energy profile from coal dependence to a diversified clean energy hub.

The investment reflects a phased, multi-year execution strategy. An initial R5 billion commitment laid the foundation for early project development, followed by R15 billion already deployed into operational and construction activities. At the conference, the company announced an additional R10 billion to scale up its renewable energy pipeline.

Central to this investment is the Ummbila Emoyeni project, which is positioned to become South Africa’s largest hybrid renewable energy cluster. The development will deliver more than 900 MW across seven phases, comprising five wind farms, one solar PV facility, and an integrated battery storage system.

Construction is progressing steadily, with the first 155 MW phase nearing completion and expected to begin supplying electricity by early 2026. The project has already generated 1200 on site jobs, with employment expected to increase to 2000 as development advances.

The investment also includes the construction of Mpumalanga’s largest new main transmission substation in more than 20 years, strengthening grid capacity to support renewable integration.

Aligned with South Africa’s Just Energy Transition objectives, approximately one third of the electricity generated will be used to decarbonise Seriti Resources’ mining operations. The remaining capacity will be traded into the market, supporting energy access for businesses and households.

The development reinforces the conference’s focus on decarbonisation, digitisation and diversification, positioning Mpumalanga at the forefront of South Africa’s evolving energy landscape.
