  • US$ 12 million photovoltaic project to expand rural electrification.
  • More than 1,200 households set to benefit from improved power access.
  • Construction scheduled for completion within eight months.

The governments of Mozambique and South Korea have officially launched construction of the Nkantha Photovoltaic Power Plant in Chifunde district, located in Tete province.

The solar project, valued at approximately US$ 12 million, is being financed by the South Korean government through the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology. Implementation will be led by Mozambique’s Energy Fund, FUNAE, as part of a broader programme to expand electricity access in rural areas.

The facility will have an installed capacity of 750 kWp and is expected to supply electricity to more than 1,200 households. The project aims to improve energy access while supporting sustainable socio economic development in the region.

Construction is expected to be completed within eight months.

The project follows an agreement signed in February between the two governments through the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology, reinforcing cooperation in the energy sector.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Tete Secretary of State Cristina Mafumo and South Korean Ambassador Bok Won Kang highlighted the project’s role in strengthening bilateral ties and advancing Mozambique’s energy transition.

Mafumo called on project implementers to adhere to timelines while ensuring high standards of quality and infrastructure resilience. She also expressed appreciation for South Korea’s support, noting the project’s expected impact on local development.

Ambassador Kang said the initiative will deliver more reliable electricity to local communities, with positive outcomes anticipated across education, healthcare, and economic activity. He added that South Korea intends to deepen its partnership with Mozambique in support of sustainable development and shared growth.
