Eskom has confirmed that it is continuing to assess submissions from residents and affected stakeholders following its notice issued under the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act regarding a potential interruption of electricity supply to the City of Johannesburg and its utility, City Power.
The consultation process was initiated on 17 May 2026 after the City accumulated overdue electricity debt of R5.26 billion.
Since then, the City has made payments totalling R4.32 billion. As of 24 July 2026, the outstanding overdue balance stands at R3.8 billion. This includes R1.22 billion on the overdue current account and R2.58 billion linked to a settlement arrangement that has been made an order of the High Court. A separate current electricity account of R2.64 billion is due on 3 August 2026.
The City has committed to further payments totalling R5.12 billion by 21 August 2026 as part of efforts to stabilise its account with the utility.
Eskom noted the progress made to date but stated that the overdue debt has not yet been fully settled. The PAJA consultation process has therefore been extended to 22 August 2026 to allow the utility to complete its assessment and monitor compliance with payment commitments.
The utility emphasised that the ongoing process does not waive any of its rights under existing agreements, court orders or applicable legislation.
Eskom said it remains focused on working with stakeholders to secure a sustainable outcome for the electricity supply industry, while the City of Johannesburg and City Power remain obligated to honour the court ordered settlement and meet all current payment deadlines.
