  • France-based renewable energy developer Voltalia has been selected by the Tunisian government to develop the 132 megawatt Wadi solar project in the Gabès region in the south-east of the country.
  • The project follows Voltalia’s earlier wins with the Sagdoud project in May 2024 and the Menzel Habib project in December 2024.

The Wadi project’s proximity to the Menzel Habib and Sagdoud sites will enable operational synergies, including shared construction, transport, and maintenance resources, strengthening the company’s efficiency on the ground.

Construction is planned to begin in 2027, with the plant expected to come online in 2028. Once operational, the facility will supply renewable energy equivalent to the consumption of around 200,000 inhabitants and avoid 120,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, supporting Tunisia’s national energy transition targets.

Tunisia aims to increase the share of renewable energy in its electricity mix to 30 percent by 2030, up from just six percent at the end of April 2025, according to the Energy Situation Observatory.

Robert Klein, Chief Executive Officer of Voltalia, commented: “We are very pleased to have been selected for this new project in Tunisia. This milestone strengthens our presence in a region with strong solar potential and enables us to support the country’s energy ambitions more closely. I would like to commend the outstanding work of our local teams: thanks to their expertise and commitment, we are moving forward in a concrete and determined way toward achieving the objectives we share with our Tunisian partners.”
