  • The funding will support early-stage development in Zambia, Madagascar, Mozambique and Sierra Leone.
  • Grant aims to reduce project risks and improve bankability for future financing.
  • The initiative aligns with AXIAN Energy’s 2030 goal of 2 GW installed renewable capacity.

AXIAN Energy has received nearly US$1 million in grant funding from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) to fast-track early-stage development of its renewable energy pipeline across Africa. Announced in January 2026, the grant targets projects in Zambia, Madagascar, Mozambique and Sierra Leone.

The funding will be applied to critical pre-construction activities that enhance project bankability and reduce early-stage risks. Key areas include technical feasibility studies, social and environmental assessments, regulatory permitting and securing power purchase agreements. The grant is expected to accelerate AXIAN Energy’s strategy to reach 2 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2030, with a focus on large-scale solar and hydropower projects that can integrate into national grids to strengthen energy sector stability.

AXIAN Energy has been expanding its African footprint through a combination of new developments and strategic acquisitions. In Zambia, the company recently acquired the 54.3 MWp Bangweulu solar farm in Kafue District and signed a memorandum of understanding to develop two solar PV plants totaling 250 MWp in partnership with Africa GreenCo.

In Senegal, construction is underway on the 60 MW NEA Kolda solar plant, featuring a 72 MWh battery energy storage system, with completion expected in 2026. Emerging projects in Madagascar and Sierra Leone include a 15 MW solar plant with 50 MWh battery storage in Madagascar and a 40 MW plant with 30 MWh storage in Sierra Leone. AXIAN Energy also signed an agreement in late 2025 to develop a 100 MWp solar-plus-storage facility in Chad.

With this NORAD grant, AXIAN Energy aims to accelerate project development across multiple African markets, supporting sustainable growth and long-term energy security on the continent.
