  • 27 MWp multi-phase solar programme to supply clean power to energy intensive chemical production.
  • One of South Africa’s largest behind the meter industrial solar installations.
  • Project supports long term energy security and emissions reduction for the water treatment sector.

Terra Firma and NCP Chlorchem are collaborating on a large scale industrial solar development in South Africa that will deliver a total installed capacity of 27 MWp across NCP’s main production site. The project is designed to supply reliable and cost effective renewable energy to NCP’s energy intensive chemical manufacturing operations, which play a critical role in water treatment across the country.

The solar programme is being implemented in multiple phases and combines rooftop, carport and ground mounted photovoltaic systems. It began with a 1.1 MWp pilot installation in 2023, which has since been expanded as part of a broader long term energy strategy. Final commissioning of the full 27 MWp capacity is expected by the end of 2026.

Once completed, the installation will rank among the largest behind the meter solar projects in South Africa’s industrial sector. The project is expected to significantly reduce grid electricity consumption, lower operating costs and cut carbon emissions, while improving energy security at a time of ongoing power supply constraints.

NCP Chlorchem is a major producer of water treatment chemicals and has identified energy reliability and sustainability as strategic priorities for its operations. The company’s production processes are highly energy intensive, making on site renewable generation an important component of its future resilience.

Terra Firma is delivering the project on an end to end basis, covering system design, implementation and long term operations and maintenance. The company has completed more than 500 commercial and industrial solar projects across Africa and continues to expand its footprint in the region’s clean energy market.

The collaboration reflects a growing trend among large industrial users in South Africa to invest in private renewable energy projects as part of the country’s broader energy transition.
