South Africa’s Draft IRP 2023 set to be redrafted in line with new Integrated Energy Plan

South Africaโ€™s newly appointed Electricity and Energy Minister, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, is responsible for drafting the countryโ€™s Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) which lays out the countryโ€™s energy generation plan. He has inherited the Draft IRP 2023 delivered by his predecessor, Gwede Mantashe, which is grossly flawed.ย Read more

The minister has committed to relook at the Draft IRP 2023 through digesting the public comments, especially the โ€œsubstantiveโ€ submissions criticizing the plan. He discussed the topic at his media briefing on the energy sector yesterday. He assured that the new leadership team was eager to finalise the documents but without sacrificing the detailed technical work that was also required.

Ramokgopa did point out that it would have been more logical to first publish the country’s new Integrated Energy Plan (IEP) to which the IRP could then been aligned. South Africa currently does not have a proper and legally compliant Integrated Energy Plan. He said he was keen to fix the anomaly.

Ramokgopa also said the countryโ€™s current Gas Masterplan requires attention indicating that changes in capacity allocation can be on the cards. Last week the IPP Office, which falls under his authority, issued an update on GASIPPPPP BW1 notifying that due to several factors the deadline for submissions has been extended to 25th March 2025.
