- South Africa’s energy regulator, NERSA, received Section 34 determinations from Minister of DMRE for the procurement of 2 500MW new generation capacity from nuclear.
- This is in line with Decision 8 of the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) for the country.
The determined capacity will reach commercial operation in the time horizon beyond 2030. The capacity is to provide clean baseload capacity in response to the approximately 24 100MW of coal capacity being decommissioned as well as to maintain supply- demand balance and improve energy security.
The consultation paper is available HERE. Stakeholders and members of the public are requested to provide written comments on the ministerial determination. Stakeholders are requested to indicate with their written comment submission if they will be interested in making oral representation to the Regulator in public hearings to be held after the closure of the written comments period.
The closing date for written comments is 5 February 2021.
