- Mega South African supermarket retailer, Checkers, is running their Sitari supermerket and the entire Sitari Village Mall located close to Somerset West, Cape Town on renewable energy.
- This is South Africa’s first premium supermarket and shopping centre to run entirely off renewable energy from wind and solar sources.
- The Sitari Village Mall, with Checkers as anchor tenant, will generate 35% of its electricity from its rooftop solar PV system.
- The remaining 65% – 1,752 MWh of renewable energy – will be sourced from Eskom’s wind plant via their Renewable Energy Tariff (RET) programme.
This is part of Checkers’ ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and comes as the retailer launches an environmental campaign to drive further awareness and dialogue on this important issue.

Eskom’s RET programme creates a renewable energy utility solution to assist in delivering on customer’s renewable energy commitments without customers having to procure renewable energy through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) or installing own renewable plant at huge capital costs. Read more
