South Africa: First Shopping Mall Powered Entirely by Renewable Energy

  • Mega South African supermarket retailer, Checkers, is running their Sitari supermerket and the entire Sitari Village Mall located close to Somerset West, Cape Town on renewable energy.
  • This is South Africa’s first premium supermarket and shopping centre to run entirely off renewable energy from wind and solar sources.
  • The Sitari Village Mall, with Checkers as anchor tenant, will generate 35% of its electricity from its rooftop solar PV system.
  • The remaining 65% – 1,752 MWh of renewable energy – will be sourced from Eskom’s wind plant via their  Renewable Energy Tariff (RET) programme.

This is part of Checkers’ ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and comes as the retailer launches an environmental campaign to drive further awareness and dialogue on this important issue.

“The commitment to renewable energy is part of Checkers’ wider climate change strategy, which acknowledges that climate change will, directly and indirectly, impact our business and the communities we are a part of. Therefore, we commit to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, continuously improve energy efficiency, and strengthen the resilience and adaptive capacity of our operations and that of our communities,” – Shoprite Group Sustainability Manager Sanjeev Raghubir

Eskom’s RET programme  creates a renewable energy utility solution to assist in delivering on customer’s renewable energy commitments without customers having to procure renewable energy through Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) or installing own renewable plant at huge capital costs. Read more

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
