- Jabu Mabuza, the chairman of South Africa’s energy utility, Eskom, has resigned.
- The announcement was made by the President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier today in a press statement.
- The Presidency also announced that Eskom will be getting a new board.
“In his resignation letter, Mabuza apologised for Eskom’s inability to meet the commitment it made to the president, the deputy president and the relevant ministers at a meeting on December 11th 2019 to avoid load shedding over this period,” the presidency said in a statement
Rampahosa commended Mabuza for taking responsibility and accepting accountability for events under his leadership.
The news comes as Eskom extends ongoing load shedding into the weekend. “Our teams will be working flat-out tonight to ensure that no further units are lost overnight, and that those scheduled to return to service do so. Unfortunately, even with our best efforts, we anticipate that there will be a need for loadshedding over the weekend” said Eskom in their latest press statement.
“Owing to inadequate maintenance over a number of years, the system remains vulnerable to unplanned outages which are sitting at 12 738MW as of 18:30 tonight. We remind customers that loadshedding is an essential and controlled measure to ensure that the integrity of the grid is not compromised.”
