Scatec brings second 60 MW phase of Botswana’s Mmadinare Solar Cluster online

  • Scatec ASA has reached commercial operation on the second 60 MW unit of the 120 MW Mmadinare Solar Cluster in Botswana, marking another milestone for the renewable energy company as it advances its footprint in Southern Africa.

The project represents Scatec’s first portfolio in Botswana. The initial 60 MW phase was commissioned in March, and both plants supply power to the national utility, Botswana Power Corporation (BPC), under a 25-year power purchase agreement. Scatec currently holds full ownership of the portfolio but plans to dilute its long-term interest by bringing in equity partners.

“We are very proud to achieve COD for the second phase of the solar power plant portfolio within budget and ahead of schedule, reinforcing our commitment to advancing renewable energy in the region,” said Scatec CEO Terje Pilskog. “This is an important first step for Botswana, which holds significant potential for competitive and reliable renewable energy to drive economic development.”

Alberto Gambacorta, Executive Vice President and General Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa, added that the project comes at a pivotal moment for the country’s energy transition. “Solar power is increasingly central to powering communities and driving sustainable growth. We are honoured to operate the country’s first utility-scale solar PV facility and contribute to Botswana’s long-term energy ambitions.”

Combined, the two plants are expected to produce around 280 GWh of clean electricity annually. Scatec will continue to manage both facilities through its in-house Operation & Maintenance and Asset Management teams.
