Eni and Azule Energy inaugurate NGC Gas Treatment Plant in Angola

  • Eni, through its satellite company Azule Energy, a 50:50 joint venture with bp and operator of the New Gas Consortium (NGC), inaugurated the NGC Gas Treatment Plant in Soyo, northern Angola last month.

The New Gas Consortium project, originally operated by Eni prior to the establishment of Azule Energy, represents Angola’s first non-associated gas development. With a processing capacity of approximately 400 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMscfd) and 20,000 barrels of condensate per day, the facility receives gas from the offshore Quiluma and Maboqueiro fields. The treated gas is then delivered to the Angola LNG plant to support both export markets and domestic energy needs.

The inauguration marks a major step in strengthening Angola’s position as a strategic supplier in the global natural gas landscape. The NGC development enhances the country’s energy diversification efforts and demonstrates responsible resource management, contributing to broader economic growth including downstream industries such as agricultural fertiliser production.

The gas treatment plant entered its commissioning phase with first gas in November 2025, achieving this milestone just 24 months after the groundbreaking ceremony in October 2023, and six months ahead of the sanctioned schedule.

The New Gas Consortium is operated by Azule Energy with a 37.4% participating interest, alongside partners Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (CABGOC) (31%), Sonangol E&P (19.8%), TotalEnergies (11.8%), and ANPG serving as the National Concessionaire.

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
