  • The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC), in collaboration with the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), is pleased to announce the publication of the report entitled Public Perceptions and Attitudes Relating to Climate Change and the Just Transition in South Africa – a 2023 nationally representative survey.

Building on insights from the State of Climate Action in South Africa Report, this study examines how South Africans view climate change and the just transition, providing critical data to shape future policy and public engagement.

Key Findings:

  • Growing climate awareness, though scepticism remains among certain socio-demographic groups.
  • Broad support for the Just Energy Transition, but better communication is needed to improve public understanding.
  • Climate perceptions differ across socio-economic, geographic, and demographic lines, influenced by education, extreme weather exposure, and social media.
  • Building public trust requires transparency, social support measures, and inclusive decision-making throughout the energy transition.
