News flash

  • Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk has exited plans to co-develop the Suswa geothermal field in Kenya.
  • The withdrawal was driven by investment concerns and ownership strategy requirements.
  • Kenya’s Geothermal Development Company continues independently with exploration activities.

Jakarta-based PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGEO) has officially withdrawn from plans to invest in and co-develop the Suswa geothermal field in Kenya. Pertamina NRE President Director John Anis cited that the investment was not commercially viable following the company’s due diligence.

A key factor in the decision was the inability to secure a single majority stake, which Pertamina requires for all its international geothermal developments. The project was initially explored in 2024 as part of Pertamina’s strategy to build a 1-GW global geothermal power portfolio.

Despite Pertamina’s exit, Kenya’s state-owned Geothermal Development Company (GDC) is continuing the project independently. The company has already mobilised drilling rigs for an exploration campaign aimed at advancing the Suswa field towards commercial development.
