Abu Dhabi-based developer Global South Utilities (GSU) has commissioned a 5 MWp grid-connected solar plant in Berbera, Somaliland, on 18 February 2026. The project forms a central part of the Green Berbera Vision initiative, which seeks to transition the city’s power system from diesel dependency to a renewable-based model supported by battery storage.
GSU holds a 45% equity stake in the Berbera Electricity Company (BEC), the city’s sole utility provider. The new solar facility is expected to generate approximately 10,000 MWh of clean electricity each year, enough to supply nearly 28,000 households while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 6,890 metric tonnes annually.
The plant’s infrastructure includes 11.2 km of 33 kV transmission lines and associated substations to integrate the solar output into the local grid. The commissioning follows BEC’s ongoing renewable expansion, which currently totals 20.38 MW of solar capacity and 2 MWh of battery storage, with plans to double renewable capacity by 2027.
