Nigeria: Construction of 614km Gas Pipeline Project on Track

  • The construction of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline is on track.
  • The natural gas pipeline project, originally signed off in July 2020, covers a distance of 614km from Ajaokuta, in Kogi State to Kano, in Kano State. 
  • The project is 15% complete and is expected to be completed on schedule.

Mele Kyari, Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has confirmed that “Despite the slowdown in economic activities, this project has not stopped  since it started about five months ago. We believe that we shall complete it within the stipulated time frame and within the estimated costs”.

The project is being executed in three phases. The first phase covers a distance of 200km between Ajaokuta and Abuja, while the second and the third phases cover a distance of 193 km and 221 km, from Abuja to Kaduna, and from Kaduna to Kano respectively.

Brentex/China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau-CPP Consortia and Oilserve/China First Highway Engineering Company-CFHEC Consortia are the EPC contractors for the project. Read more

The project which is reputed to be the single biggest gas pipeline project in the West Africa and is expected to transport approximately 3.5 billion cubic feet of gas per day.

This pipeline is intended to establish a connection between pipeline networks in the eastern, western and northern regions of Nigeria. The project strives to utilize the country’s abundant natural gas resources to sustainably supply gas to northern Nigeria. The development is expected to reduce the quantity of gas flared in the country’s oil fields and thus improve air quality.
