- NERSA has extended the deadline for written submissions on two key electricity market reform consultation papers to 4 August 2026.
- The extension follows stakeholder requests for additional time to assess the complex and extensive documents.
- Virtual public hearings on the proposed wholesale electricity pricing methodology and transitional generation pricing framework will take place in August 2026.
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has extended the deadline for written comments on its consultation papers covering the proposed wholesale electricity pricing methodology and the transitional generation pricing and vesting contract framework.
The new deadline for submissions on both consultation papers is 4 August 2026, replacing the original closing dates of 26 June 2026 for the wholesale pricing methodology and 6 July 2026 for the transitional generation pricing and vesting contract framework.
NERSA said the extension was granted following requests from stakeholders who cited the complexity and extensive scope of the consultation documents. According to the regulator, the additional time will enable stakeholders to prepare more informed, coherent and constructive submissions.
The wholesale electricity pricing methodology consultation paper was published on 18 May 2026, while the transitional generation pricing and vesting contract framework consultation paper was released on 20 May 2026.
The proposed framework forms part of South Africa’s ongoing electricity market reform process and will inform future decisions on transitional generation pricing and vesting contracts under the Electricity Regulation Act, 2006, as amended.
Stakeholders and members of the public are invited to submit written comments via email to mypd@nersa.org.za no later than 16:30 on 4 August 2026.
NERSA has also confirmed dates for virtual public hearings on the two consultation processes.
The public hearing on the Wholesale Electricity Pricing Methodology will be held on 14 August 2026 from 09:30 to 12:00 via Microsoft Teams. Stakeholders wishing to attend or make presentations must submit their requests by 16:30 on 6 August 2026.
The public hearing on the Transitional Generation Pricing and Vesting Contract Framework will take place on 19 August 2026 from 09:30 to 12:00, also via Microsoft Teams. Requests to attend or present must be submitted by 16:30 on 10 August 2026.
The consultation documents are available on the NERSA website, and the regulator said all submissions received during the consultation period will be considered before final decisions are made on the proposed frameworks.
