- The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has confirmed that it has reviewed and noted Sasol Gas (Pty) Ltd.’s adjustment to its maximum gas price for the third quarter of the 2025/26 financial year.
- The adjustment forms part of NERSA’s June 2025 decision allowing the company to revise its maximum price each quarter in line with changes in gas acquisition costs.
According to NERSA, Sasol Gas submitted the required cost and pricing information on 17 October 2025 to support its proposed adjustment for the period 1 January to 31 March 2026. The regulator verified the data by checking contractual provisions, conducting integrity assessments of reported gas volumes and acquisition costs, and cross-referencing volume information with data received from Mozambique.
Following this review, NERSA confirmed that the maximum gas price for Quarter 3 of FY2025/26 will be set at R85.10/GJ, a 6% decrease from the previous quarter’s approved level of R90.57/GJ. The regulator attributes the reduction chiefly to the cost of new gas from Mozambique, influenced by oil-linked derivatives, exchange rate movements and changes in the US Producer Price Index (USPPI).
NERSA stressed that the maximum price does not automatically equal the price paid by customers.
“It is expected of Sasol Gas to charge actual gas prices lower than the maximum price,” said Nomfundo Maseti, Full-Time Regulator Member responsible for piped-gas regulation.
The regulator added that the downward adjustment is a positive development for consumers, who are likely to benefit from reduced gas prices in the upcoming quarter.
The quarterly monitoring approach is designed to:
- safeguard consumers by ensuring that maximum prices remain reasonable and justified;
- promote accountability by requiring licensees to substantiate adjustments with verifiable costdata; and
- enhance transparency through NERSA’s ongoing scrutiny of costs and gas price changes.
