- France has agreed to provide a €39.2 million loan—about $45.4 million—to support the construction of 10 solar power stations with battery storage in Mauritania, a move aimed at expanding clean energy access across the country.
The financing, implemented through the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), will allow Mauritania to integrate solar and battery systems into existing diesel-powered plants, lowering electricity costs and improving reliability.
The project is designed to reduce the energy gap between rural and urban areas by hybridising thermal power plants with solar photovoltaic technology. Officials say the initiative will play a key role in Mauritania’s broader transition toward renewable energy.
Work in the first phase will focus on several towns, including Nouamghar, Oualata, Boumdeid, El Ghayra, Chinguetti, Ouadane, Tamchekett, Tidjikja, and Aoujeft, where the new systems are expected to significantly bolster local electricity supply.
