Mulilo has reached financial close on the Hartebeesfontein Battery Energy Storage System project, a 77 MW / 308 MWh facility located near Klerksdorp in the City of Matlosana Local Municipality in South Africa’s North West Province. The site is positioned close to Eskom’s Hermes Main Transmission Substation, reinforcing its role in supporting grid stability in a key transmission corridor.

The project forms part of Bid Window 2 of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, through which Mulilo secured five of the eight awarded projects. The Hartebeesfontein facility is designed to provide system support through its 308 MWh storage capacity and will deliver ancillary services to the National Transmission Company of South Africa under a 15 year power purchase agreement.

The financial close was achieved through coordinated efforts between public and private sector stakeholders, including the Department of Electricity and Energy, the Independent Power Producer Office, Eskom and the National Transmission Company of South Africa, alongside project shareholders Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Norfund.

Reatile Group is Mulilo’s development partner on the project. Reatile Group chief commercial officer Sunette Smith said the financial close reflects the alignment of capital, policy and execution capacity in building South Africa’s energy infrastructure backbone, highlighting the role of the partnership in scaling renewable energy delivery.

Project financing has been secured from Absa, Standard Bank and Nedbank, with advisory and legal support provided by ENS, Bowmans, Fasken, PepperTree Capital, Marsh and Arup.

Mulilo chief executive officer Jan Fourie said the financial close marks a significant milestone in expanding battery energy storage capacity in South Africa. He noted that this is the company’s fifth project to reach financial close in 2026 and reflects the execution capability of the team alongside its partners and stakeholders. He added that the Hartebeesfontein project will strengthen grid stability and support continued renewable energy integration through coordinated system support services.
