Malawi’s Mzuni University signs PPA for 20MW solar/BESS power

  • Malawi’s state owned energy utiltiy, ESCOM, has signed a PPA with Mzuni University for 20MW solar/BESS power.
The university is investing in Choma solar power plant to produce 20MW with 5MW battery energy storage. The university is undertaking the project through the Test and Training Centre (TCRET) in the Department of Energy Systems under the Faculty of Science, Technology and Innovation.
Mzuni Vice Chancellor, Wales Singini, said that the university is exploring various forms of renewable energy, including geothermal and wind power. The solar power project will also provide Mzuni students studying energy programs with valuable practical experience, preparing them for the industry.
Construction is expected to start in September 2025.
