The Islamic Development Bank Board (IsDB) of Executive Directors, chaired by IsDB President Muhammad Al Jasser, has approved US$59.28 million in financing to support a rural electrification project in Mauritania aimed at improving equitable and sustainable access to electricity.

The project will be implemented across several regions including Adrar, Assaba, Inchiri, Brakna, Hodh El Chargui, Hodh El Gharbi and Tagant, targeting underserved communities where access to reliable power remains limited.

The funding package includes US$25.35 million from the IsDB and US$33.93 million from the IsDB Concessional Fund. The initiative is designed not only to expand electricity infrastructure but also to drive inclusive economic development at community level.

A key component of the project is the installation of 10 multifunctional energy platforms that will be managed by local women cooperatives. These platforms are expected to support micro enterprises, enhance productive uses of energy and strengthen income generating opportunities for women headed households and vulnerable groups.

The project also marks a milestone for the IsDB Concessional Fund, representing one of its first operational deployments following its launch in February 2026. The funding allocation reflects a strategic focus on addressing fragility while advancing sustainable energy access and economic resilience.
