Chinese string inverter manufacturer Huawei remains the world’s biggest by sales. This is the fourth year in a row that the Chinese manufacturer has remained on top despite losing 4% of market share last year, according to research analysts Wood Mackenzie.

The Woodmac report provides market share information for the leading solar PV inverter manufacturers, both on a global and regional level. The report also provides a historical global ranking of the top 10 solar PV inverter vendors, from 2012 through 2018, along with a cumulative shipment history for these top vendors.

Huawei, Sungrow and SMA lead the top five followed by Power Electronics and ABB. The market share of all five declined for the first time in six years signalling a possible changing of the guard with manufacturers occupying positions sixth to tenth growing market share from 15% to 19% in the same period. These include Sineng, Goodwe, SolarEdge Technologies, Ingeteam and TBEA Sunoasis.

The two big movers in 2018 were Israel’s SolarEdge and Spain’s Ingeteam who broke into the top 10 for the first time. The Asia-Pacific region once again accounted for the biggest slice of the market last year, with around 64% of total shipments.

The authors of the report comment that it is difficult to predict future growth areas, “Some companies are now looking to differentiate on residential and commercial offerings and some may opt to exit utility scale PV entirely, as Schneider Electric did several months ago.”
