- R15 billion investment delivers 520 MW of wind and solar capacity.
- 380 MW already connected to grid with full output expected by June 2026.
- Project supports mining sector decarbonisation and strengthens energy security.
Envusa Energy has officially inaugurated its flagship Koruson 2 cluster, a 520 MW renewable energy development located on the border of South Africa Eastern Cape and Northern Cape provinces, marking one of the largest privately developed clean energy projects in the country to date.
The project represents a R15 billion investment and a major milestone for the Envusa Energy joint venture between Anglo American and EDF Power Solutions. It underscores the growing role of private sector participation in advancing South Africa energy transition and addressing long standing power supply constraints.
The Koruson 2 cluster combines 240 MW of solar photovoltaic capacity from the Mooi Plaats facility with two wind farms, Umsobomvu and Hartebeesthoek, each contributing 140 MW. As of April 2026, 380 MW has been connected to the grid, with the remaining 140 MW expected to reach commercial operation by June 2026.
Electricity generated by the project is transmitted through an innovative wheeling arrangement across the Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd transmission network. The power will supply key industrial users including Kumba Iron Ore, De Beers Group and Valterra Platinum, enabling significant progress toward their decarbonisation targets while enhancing long term energy security.

Speaking at the inauguration, Envusa Energy board chair Nolitha Fakude highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration between government and industry in unlocking large scale energy projects. She noted that the Koruson 2 cluster forms part of a broader pipeline that reflects deliberate investment decisions and coordinated action aimed at reshaping the national energy landscape.
Beyond energy supply, the development incorporates inclusive ownership structures designed to deliver long term socio economic benefits. Local communities hold equity participation through structured trusts, while Pele Green Energy retains a 20% stake in the project companies, supporting broader economic empowerment objectives.
The Koruson 2 cluster is a key component of Anglo American strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040 and demonstrates how large scale renewable energy projects can be deployed to power energy intensive industries while contributing to a more resilient and sustainable energy system.
