  • 50 MW Mansa Solar Plant commissioned in Luapula Province at cost of about US$48 million.
  • Project supports Zambia’s target of 10,000 MW installed capacity by 2030.
  • Investment expected to boost mining activity and local economic development.

President Hakainde Hichilema has commissioned the 50 MW Mansa Solar Plant in Chief Mabumba’s area of Mansa District in Luapula Province, marking a significant step in Zambia’s renewable energy expansion.

The project forms part of the country’s broader strategy to reach 10,000 MW of installed capacity by 2030, as government accelerates efforts to address power deficits and strengthen energy security.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, President Hichilema described the development as a historic milestone for Luapula Province, which has not recorded major power generation investment in more than 60 years. He said the project reflects deliberate planning and execution aimed at transforming the energy sector.

The President noted that the plant is expected to create jobs and support key economic activities, including manganese mining in the province. He also called for unity among citizens, emphasising that national cohesion is critical to attracting further investment in energy infrastructure, including additional solar projects and transmission developments such as the Kasama to Mansa line.

Minister of Energy Makozo Chikote said previously criticised solar projects are now delivering tangible results, with more developments in the pipeline. He added that improved generation capacity has contributed to the elimination of load shedding, signalling progress in stabilising electricity supply.

ZESCO Managing Director Justin Loongo said the 50 MW facility will enhance the utility’s reliability in power supply. Constructed at a cost of about US$48 million, the project includes more than 1,500 panels. Development commenced in February 2025, with substantial completion achieved by December 2025.

Loongo added that the plant is expected to contribute to economic growth in Luapula Province, in line with ZESCO’s inclusive development agenda.

Luapula Province Minister Nason Musonda described the project as transformative, noting that increased access to electricity will stimulate economic activity and job creation in the region.

The Mansa Solar Plant is part of a growing pipeline of renewable energy projects being implemented by the Zambian government to sustainably address electricity shortages and diversify the country’s energy mix.

China Machinery Company, the project contractor, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting infrastructure development in Zambia, while Chief Mabumba pledged community support to safeguard the investment and prevent vandalism.
