- ENGIE has started construction the of 75MW Grootspruit solar project in the Freestate, South Africa.
- It is one of two solar PV projects the french IPP reached commercial close for under the controversial Bid Window Five (BW5) of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) in December 2022.
- The were awarded preferred bidder status in November 2021.
The two projects, each at 75 MW of contracted capacity will be built and operated by ENGIE in partnership with Pele Green Energy. Grootspruit PV will be constructed in the Free State province, while Graspan Solar PV will be built in the Northern Cape.
Aurex and Ablon have been selected as the preferred contractors for Grootspruit project. “As Ablon Construction, a company deeply rooted in the local community for the past 24 years, we are honoured and excited to be part of the groundbreaking ceremony for the Grootspruit PV Solar Farm. This collaboration between all stakeholders is a significant step toward a successful project that will contribute to South Africa’s clean energy goals,” said Lizelle Pike, Ablon Contracts Manager.
