- Anglo American Plc announced yesterday that it has partnered with Enel Chile to power its mine with renewable sources from 2021.
- Renewable energy supplied by Enel Chile will power Anglo American’s flagship Los Bronces copper mine, as well as its El Soldado and Chagres operations.
- The agreement signed considers a consumption of up to 3 Tera Watts hour (TWh) per year, becoming the largest contract supplied 100% with renewable sources.
Anglo American said the deal, which takes effect in January 2021, will reduce its emissions of carbon dioxide by more than 70%. The news follows the installation of a floating solar system at its Los Bronces mine outside the Chilean capital of Santiago.
This agreement forms part of Anglo American’s commitment to contribute to the global effort to combat the effects of climate change and have increasingly sustainable operations. “We are working from different fields to contribute to a healthy environment. Our goal is to continue reducing our emissions and achieve efficient and increasingly respectful operations in their environment. The signing of this contract adds to other actions that we are carrying out in the same line, such as the installation of the first photovoltaic plant built on a tailings deposit and the incorporation of electric buses for the transport of our workers, ”explained Hennie Faul, Copper Executive President of Anglo American.

We are the first renewable energy operator in Chile and we are convinced that, by promoting this type of energy, we meet our clients and make a significant contribution to the country, ”said Paolo Pallotti, general manager of Enel Chile.
