- Expression of Interest process opens for EPC contractors interested in South Africa’s proposed first LNG import terminal.
- Project will support industrial gas supply and power generation infrastructure at Richards Bay.
- Successful contractors will be required to meet localisation, skills development and economic participation objectives.
The Zululand Energy Terminal (ZET) has launched an Expression of Interest (EOI) process for Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractors interested in participating in the development of its proposed liquefied natural gas import terminal at the Port of Richards Bay in KwaZulu Natal.
The EOI marks the first stage of a structured procurement process aimed at identifying qualified EPC contractors capable of delivering what is expected to become South Africa’s first LNG import facility. The selection process will progress through a Request for Information (RFI) stage before moving to a Request for Proposal (RFP).
According to ZET, the terminal is being developed to strengthen South Africa’s energy security by creating a new gateway for LNG imports and supporting the diversification of the country’s energy mix.
The project is being developed through a joint venture between Vopak Terminal Durban and Transnet Pipelines. Under a 25 year concession, the consortium will design, finance, construct, operate and maintain the LNG terminal in the South Dunes Precinct at the Port of Richards Bay.
The facility is expected to play a key role in enabling LNG imports while supporting the development of associated gas infrastructure for industrial users and power generation projects.
ZET said EPC execution will be aligned with its localisation and economic development objectives. Contractors selected for future phases will be expected to promote local supplier participation, support skills development initiatives and maximise the use of local labour during project implementation.
Companies that meet the qualification criteria and participate in the EOI process will be added to the project’s vendor database and may be shortlisted for future procurement stages as preferred contractors or subcontractors.
Interested contractors are invited to access the full EOI documentation HERE.
