- The agreement paves the way for large scale solar development starting with a 100 MW pilot project.
- The projects expected to boost energy security and support Zambia’s clean energy transition.
- The partnership targets up to 1,000 MW of cumulative solar capacity.
The Zambian Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Longi Solar Technology and Sino Green Technology to cooperate on the development and implementation of renewable energy projects across the country.
The agreement was signed through the Ministry of Energy and is expected to provide a significant boost to Zambia’s clean energy programme, particularly in the solar power sector.
Under the MoU, a 100 megawatt pilot solar power plant is scheduled to commence construction in April 2026 in Itezhi Tezhi District. Each solar plant developed under the partnership is expected to be completed within eight to ten months. In addition to the pilot project, several other solar power plants will be rolled out in different parts of the country under the agreed framework.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Engineer Simwaba urged Longi Solar and Sino Green Technology to fast track implementation once construction begins and encouraged the partners to engage Government early should any challenges arise. e reaffirmed Government’s commitment to providing the necessary support to ensure smooth and timely project execution.
Engineer Simwaba noted that the agreement follows President Hakainde Hichilema’s official visit to China in 2025, which helped lay the groundwork for deeper cooperation between Zambia and Chinese companies in the renewable energy sector.
Mr Jin praised the Zambian Government for its efficiency in facilitating the project to date and reaffirmed the partners’ long term commitment to the country. He revealed that the companies plan to deliver a cumulative solar capacity of up to 1,000 megawatts under the agreement.
He also disclosed that Zambia imported solar panels from China in 2025 with a total capacity of 500 megawatts, of which 300 megawatts were manufactured by Longi Solar, underscoring the company’s growing role in Zambia’s renewable energy landscape.
Longi Solar is among the world’s leading manufacturers of solar equipment. The partnership with Sino Green Technology and the Zambian Government is expected to significantly expand Zambia’s solar generation capacity, enhance energy security, and support the country’s transition towards sustainable and climate resilient energy solutions.
