Zambia launches Net Metering Program to promote the adoption of renewable energy

  • Zambia’s energy utility, ZESCO, has announced the launch of the Net Metering Program, set to begin this month.
  • This is in line with The Electricity (Net Metering) Regulations, 2024, and is designed to promote the adoption of renewable energy sources amongst existing customers, allowing them to generate their own electricity and feed any excess power back into the grid.
  • The people of Zambia face blackouts lasting more than 12 hours daily.
  • ZESCO Limited also recently announced a new power rationing schedule starting July 15, 2024.

Net metering is a system that allows prosumers (consumers who also produce electricity) to generate their own power (limited to the contracted/declared demand with ZESCO) from renewable energy sources such as solar. Any excess electricity generated can be fed back into the ZESCO grid, effectively allowing prosumers to offset their electricity bills. This system not only promotes the use of renewable energy but also enhances energy security and sustainability in Zambia.ย

Net Metering Frameworkย

To ensure smooth integration, a comprehensive framework has been established:ย

  • Administrative Fees: A nominal fee for application processing and assessments as approved by the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) at the time of application submission.ย
  • Metering Costs: The Prosumer will bear the cost of the meter.ย
  • Connection Agreements: Upon payment and approval, the prosumer will sign the Net Metering Supply Agreement (NMSA) and the Net Metering Connection Agreement (NMCA).ย

Application Processย

The website, www.zesco.co.zm, will provide guidelines on a step-by-step process for a prospective prosumer for net metering with Renewable Energy Systems (RES). The guidelines cover the process from application to the point of connection and operation.ย

Benefits of Net Meteringย

  • Cost Savings: Generate your own electricity and receive credits for excess power.ย
  • Environmental Impact: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using renewable energy.ย
  • Energy Independence: Decrease reliance on traditional power sources.ย
  • Economic Growth: Create jobs in renewable energy installation and maintenance.ย

Transfer of Net Metering Accountsย

When there is change of ownership on a property with a renewable energy system, the net metering account will be closed. The new owner must apply for a standard electricity account and can then opt to apply for a net metering account.ย

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
