Who is behind fossil fuel expansion in Africa?

  • Africa is the most climate vulnerable continent.
  • So, who is behind fossil fuel expansion in Africa?
  • You will find that most of the countries responsible for the climate crisis in the first place, are behind fossil fuel exploration and investment in Africa.

A report titled “Who is Financing Fossil Fuel Expansion in Africa?” was released at the COP27. A total of 37 African non-profit organisations wrote this report.

This report identifies the financiers and investors behind 200 companies, which are flooding Africa with new fossil fuel projects. None of these companies are serious about transitioning. All of these companies are pursuing reckless fossil expansion plans that are incompatible with a 1.5°C climate path. We call on financial institutions to immediately cease all investments, loans and financial services to them.

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
