The United States has announced its intention to withdraw from the International Renewable Energy Agency IRENA following an executive order issued by President Donald Trump. IRENA is one of 66 international organisations listed in the order, which primarily targets institutions involved in climate, labour and migration related work.

The list also includes the International Solar Alliance and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. According to a statement from the US Department of State, the Trump Administration considers these organisations to be redundant, mismanaged, unnecessary or wasteful. The statement further claims that some bodies are captured by interests that conflict with US priorities or pose a risk to national sovereignty, freedoms and economic prosperity.

A memorandum of understanding signed by President Trump notes that for organisations affiliated with the United Nations, including IRENA, withdrawal will involve ceasing participation or funding to the extent permitted by law.

In response, IRENA Director General Francesco La Camera expressed regret over the decision, highlighting the longstanding role the United States has played in advancing renewable energy through international cooperation.

La Camera emphasised that renewable energy is no longer only a climate solution but a core economic driver. He noted that renewables support competitiveness, lower power costs, create jobs and unlock investment opportunities, while also strengthening energy security in an increasingly uncertain global environment.

He added that international collaboration is more important than ever and reaffirmed IRENA’s commitment to supporting countries and businesses as they accelerate the global shift toward renewable energy. This includes delivering socioeconomic, environmental and security benefits that are particularly relevant for developing regions such as Africa.

IRENA currently has 171 member countries. The organisation acknowledged the contributions made by the United States over the years and stated that opportunities for future cooperation remain open.
