  • Security conditions improved with CEO confirming project restart is permanent.
  • US$20 billion Mozambique LNG development resumes construction after 2021 suspension.
  • Gas exports expected by 2029 with 13 mtpa production capacity.

TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné has reaffirmed confidence in the long term security and continuity of the Mozambique LNG megaproject, stating that the development “will never stop again” following its recent restart.

Speaking in Brussels after meeting Mozambican President Daniel Chapo, Pouyanné confirmed that conditions on the ground have improved significantly, allowing the company to resume operations with renewed certainty.

“Security is good today. We will continue to work,” said Pouyanné, adding that the company remains fully committed to delivering the project for both domestic and international markets.

The US$20 billion Mozambique LNG project, located on the Afungi Peninsula, officially resumed construction on 29 January after being halted in April 2021 due to security concerns linked to insurgent attacks in Cabo Delgado Province. The suspension had been declared under force majeure.

Pouyanné emphasised that the next phase will focus on advancing construction and strengthening engagement with the Mozambican government. He noted the importance of maintaining close alignment with national leadership given the scale and strategic importance of the investment.

The project targets gas production from the Rovuma Basin, one of the largest offshore gas reserves globally, and is expected to deliver up to 13 mtpa of LNG once operational. First exports are anticipated in 2029.

President Chapo previously described the project’s restart as a symbol of resilience and determination, underlining its significance for Mozambique, Africa and global energy markets. He highlighted the full resumption of activities as a major milestone after nearly five years of inactivity.
