  • The 2024 South African Renewable Energy Grid Survey (SAREGS) results reveals a remarkable growth in the renewable energy sector.
  • Jointly published by Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd, SAPVIA, and the South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA), the survey reports a significant increase in projects, now totalling 133 GW across various development stages, compared to 66 GW in 2023.
  • Industry engagement has also surged, with participation rising from 209 to 483 contributions.

Key takeaways

  • Supply will exeed demand at current growth rate.
  • Growth tempered by transmission capacity constraints.
  • 66 GW of projects are at an advanced development level (shovel ready) up from 18 GW last year.
  • Solar PV leads with over 55 GW, followed by wind at 28 GW, and various hybrid and battery projects.
  • The Northern Cape leads with 29 GW of interest, followed by the Free State.
  • 28GW under development specifically for the private sector off-taker market.
  • 43GW capacity under development for either private or public off-taker

The survey underscores the urgent need for infrastructure investment in transmission, distribution, and substations to support this growth.

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
