  • The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA) and the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing negotiations of mutually beneficial cooperation in the nuclear fuel cycle, Small Modular Reactors (SMR), and other agreed-upon areas.

In attendance was South Africaโ€™s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Ramokgopa and his delegation, which included NECSA’s Group CEO, Mr. Loyiso Tyabashe.

โ€œThis collaboration underscores South Africaโ€™s commitment to enhancing South Africaโ€™s nuclear research and technology capabilities whilst fostering the next generation of nuclear scientists,โ€ said Ramokgopa.

Ramokgopa is currently on a working visit to China aimed at strengthening South Africaโ€™s energy capacity to counter the declining energy security and advancing the countryโ€™s transition towards a more reliable and sustainable energy system.

The focus areas during the visit include:

  • Advanced clean coal technologies;
  • Intelligent microgrid systems;
  • Renewable energy integration;
  • Bilateral partnerships;
  • Collaboration to drive localisation; and
  • Cooperation regarding fuel cycle technologies.

โ€œThis working visit to China is not merely a technical mission; it is a strategic engagement aimed at asserting our sovereign energy diplomacy and securing the partnerships necessary for sustainable industrial development with specific interest in high voltage DC transmission and high frequency distribution smart networks,โ€ said Ramokgopa.

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
