South Africa’s long debated nuclear energy programme is moving decisively toward implementation, with a clear shift from policy discussion to delivery.
Speaking at the Nuclear Energy Program Implementing Organisation workshop on 04 February 2026, Acting Director General Subesh Pillay said the priority is now to build a nuclear programme that is safe, lawful, affordable and credible. He stressed that success will depend on strong governance, independent regulation and public accountability.
Pillay highlighted South Africa’s established nuclear base, including the Koeberg nuclear power station, the SAFARI 1 research reactor and internationally recognised safeguards systems. He said the next phase requires disciplined sequencing, effective implementation and the strengthening of both research capacity and industrial capability.
He noted that nuclear energy should be viewed not only as a source of electricity but as a strategic national capability that must deliver long term public value through transparency and precision.
The Nuclear Forum, taking place on 5 March 2026 as an official side event of the Africa Energy Indaba to be hosted in Cape Town, offers an unmissable opportunity for stakeholders to engage in shaping the continent’s nuclear future.
