- The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) today announced that, since the introduction of its registration of electricity generation facilities in 2018, it has successfully registered a total of 1 971 generation facilities, with a combined capacity of 12 737 MW.
In the fourth quarter of the 2024/25 financial year, NERSA registered 160 new generation facilities, contributing an impressive capacity of 2 187 MW and an investment value of R41.94 billion. Notably, six of these facilities are registered for commercial purposes, with a capacity of 957 MW and an investment value of R15.68 billion. The predominant technology chosen during this quarter was solar photovoltaic (PV), underscoring South Africa’s abundant sunlight resources, which is ideal for both small-scale and large-scale energy generation.
The top three provinces in terms of the number of newly registered generation facilities in the fourth quarter are Gauteng, Western Cape and Limpopo with 49, 33 and 20 registered generation facilities, respectively. However, when considering total installed capacity and investment value, Limpopo emerges as the leader with an impressive 1 054 MW and an investment value of R22.69 billion, followed by Free State with 398 MW and a R7.43 billion investment, and North West with 410 MW and a R6.51 billion investment.
โIn our continuous efforts to enhance efficiency, NERSA successfully processed all 160 applications during the fourth quarter within an average turnaround time of 12 working days. This achievement demonstrates our dedication to improving turnaround times and supporting the growth of the energy sector in South Africaโ, said Nomfundo Maseti, NERSAโs Regulator Member responsible for Electricity Regulation.
