  • In South Africa, it will soon be illegal to sell light bulbs with an efficiency rating of less than 90 lumens per watt for household use.
  • Last year, the Department of Trade Industry and Competition published a Government Gazette setting a new standard for lightbulb energy efficiency, which now comes into effect.

The minister withdrew the compulsory specification for single-capped fluorescent lamps (VC 9091) and the compulsory specification for incandescent lamps (VC 8043), and replace them with the compulsory specification for energy efficiency and functional performance requirements of general services lamps.

The new laws open -up the widespread adoption of light emitting diodes (LED) lighting as the  lighting option that readily complies with the new requirements.

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
