South Africa: Climate Justice Coalition to March to the Office of the Presidency on Nelson Mandela Day to Deliver Emergency Energy Plan Petition

  • The Climate Justice Coalition, a coalition of South African trade unions, grassroots, community-based and non-profit organisations, will march to the Office of the Presidency on Monday, 18 July, Nelson Mandela Day.
  • They will hand over a petition addressed to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The petition calls on the President to implement an emergency renewable energy plan to end load-shedding, replace Minister Mantashe, and fix the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. With 2022 likely to be the worst year of load-shedding on record and fuel prices at an all-time high, members of the coalition are part of a growing public call for urgent development of renewable energy solutions to address South Africa’s energy crisis.

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
