- Solgas Energy Private Limited, an independent power producer, plans to expand its Hwange solar plant in Zimbabwe by adding up to 10 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity by the end of 2025.
This expansion follows an initial US$7.3 million investment in 2021 and aims to ultimately develop a 50 MW plant on the 100-hectare site at Cross Mabale. The existing 5.3 MW plant, comprising 15,660 panels, currently generates an average of 27-33 megawatt-hours daily, which is fed into the national grid. Solgas is also implementing agrivoltaic practices, such as grazing sheep, to manage vegetation and maintain optimal energy output.
Zimbabwe desperately needs to diversify their energy mix.
