- Niveshen Govender steps down after four years leading wind energy advocacy.
- Four new board members appointed at 2026 AGM, with Stephen Koopman named Chairperson.
- Industry stakeholders reaffirm confidence in wind energy growth and policy reform.
The South African Wind Energy Association has marked a significant leadership transition with the departure of Chief Executive Officer Niveshen Govender who departs this week, with new board members steering the organisation through its next phase of growth.
Govender concludes a four year tenure at the helm of the association, during which he played a central role in advancing South Africa’s wind energy agenda. His departure was commemorated at an industry gathering held in Johannesburg on 09 April, attended by key stakeholders across the renewable energy sector, including representatives from government, industry associations, and international partners.
During his tenure, Govender championed predictable procurement frameworks, industrialisation policy, and the development of local manufacturing capacity. His leadership coincided with a critical period in South Africa’s energy transition, with a focus on positioning wind energy as a competitive and scalable solution within the national energy mix.
Industry leaders noted his contribution to strengthening stakeholder engagement and advancing policy dialogue, as well as his emphasis on building a sustainable and export capable wind energy industry.
The leadership transition comes as SAWEA announced the appointment of four new board members at its 2026 Annual General Meeting held last month. Caroline Nhlane of Enel Green Power South Africa, Phemelo Mitchell of Pele Green Energy, Stephan van den Berg of Globeleq South Africa, and Stephen Koopman of ENERTRAG South Africa have joined the board for a new term.
Following the AGM, Koopman was appointed Chairperson for a two year term. Outgoing Chairperson Sunette Smith will remain on the board as Treasurer for the 2026 financial year, alongside existing board member Kevin Minkoff, completing the leadership structure.
Koopman assumes the role at a time of ongoing market reform in South Africa’s energy sector. He highlighted the wind industry’s track record in delivering utility scale power, reducing generation costs, and contributing to national decarbonisation objectives.
Looking ahead, Koopman identified key growth areas including grid integration, hybrid renewable energy solutions, and strengthened partnerships to support continued sector expansion.
The association also reaffirmed confidence in its strategic direction, with Govender expressing support for the incoming leadership team and its ability to advance SAWEA’s 2026 priorities.
