Private sector renewable energy projects reach 11GW milestone in South Africa

  • NERSA recently released the December and January statistics for registered generation facilities in South Africa. 
  • Total private sector renewable energy projects reach 11GW milestone.

Main takeaways:

  • The total registered capacity increased by 1584 MW to 11 246 MW.
  • The total number of registered facilities increased by 79 from 1656 to 1735 facilities.
  • The registered capacity of Solar PV projects increased from 6090 MW to 7673 MW.
  • The share of Solar PV projects of total registered capacity increased by 5.2% to 68.2%.
  • The registered capacity of projects 100 MW and larger increased to 7505 MW. Solar PV projects account for 61.75% and Wind projects 38.24%, respectively.
  • The registered capacity of projects 10MW and larger likely designed for wheeling increased to 10 041 MW. Solar PV projects account for 67.53% and Wind projects 32.47%, respectively.
  • Limpopo leads the way in terms of most capacity registered.
