Presidency signs MoU with Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency to monitor JET IP

  • The Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency (MGCA) has recently signed an MoU with the Presidency that will see both parties support the Mpumalanga Provincial Government in implementing, monitoring, recording, and evaluating the Just Energy Transition Implementation Plan (JET IP).

The JET IP aims to transition South Africa to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy and society by mid-century. This involves renewable energy dominating the energy mix, significant cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, and economic diversification, with benefits reaching priority communities. Co-benefits include reduced air pollution, regeneration of mining-affected lands, and the freeing of water resources.

The MGCA aims to facilitate the transition of the Mpumalanga Province economy from traditional industries into the green economy revolution by removing barriers to low carbon development for the purpose of increasing the standard of living of communities in the region. Home to coal mining and coal fired power stations, Mpumalanga boasts one of the highest densities of air pollution in the world. Read more
