  • A power plant servicing Blocks 1 and 2 of the Simandou iron ore mine, a large mining complex in the West African country of Guinea, has been commissioned.
  • The complex has one of the richest undeveloped iron ore deposits in the world.
  • The energising of the plant is set to trigger full-scale operations.
  • The size of plant and technology deployed has not been disclosed.

The mega mining complex has been developed by the Winning Consortium Simandou (“WCS”) made up of Winning International Group from Singapore, China Hongqiao, and UMS Guinea.  “Commissioning this first power plant ensures operational readiness and underscores our commitment to long-term infrastructure development in Guinea,” said the consortium in a statement.

WCS and its affiliates will develop and operate the massive open pit iron ore mine, transmission inter-connector, the railway, the port and an airport. Construction will be completed by several major international contractors, including Chinese companies and Guinean service providers specialised in survey, design, construction as well as the operation of mines and logistics. It is the worlds largest mining project with a cape of over US$ 20 billion.

This inter-connector will link Guinea’s power network to other West African countries, supporting energy trade and grid stability while also enabling cleaner, more reliable electricity supply to both the mining operation and surrounding regions.
