  • On 1 January 2025, the amended Electricity Regulation Act, 2006 (Act No. 4 of 2006) (โ€˜the ERAโ€™) came into operation, with the primary objective of enabling the transition to a competitive electricity market.
  • In the interest of an orderly transition to a competitive market and in accordance with section 5 of the ERA, the Energy Regulator approved the establishment of an advisory forum, known as the Electricity Market Advisory Forum (EMAF).
  • This forum will provide expert advice to the Energy Regulator on matters related to the electricity market and its regulation, as outlined in the NERSA media statement of 2 May 2025.

The advisory forum, amongst other things as per the approved terms of reference, will (1) review the Market Code/Rule and make recommendations to assist the Energy Regulator to provide regulatory oversight and facilitate the transition to a competitive market, and (2) make recommendations to the Energy Regulator on the measures necessary to enable the surveillance, monitoring, investigation and enforcement related to the Market Operator licence, the Market Rule and Market Code.

Considering the above, NERSA invites nominations for electricity market, regulatory and competition experts to participate in the EMAF, should they be appointed by NERSA. Any individual nomination to the EMAF must be supported by at least three nomination forms from peers for each person nominated.

Nomination forms are available upon request from EMAFnominations@nersa.org.za. These forms are also available on the NERSA website at www.nersa.org.za, under โ€˜Electricityโ€™ > โ€˜Consultationโ€™ > โ€˜Noticesโ€™

Note:

  • Appointment to the EMAF is for a term of three years at the discretion of the Energy Regulator. Participation in the EMAF is voluntary and will not be remunerated.
  • Submitting a nomination does not guarantee an appointment of the nominated person to the EMAF. Only supported nominations will be considered.
  • All nominations will be reviewed meticulously, and the appointment of each member will be confirmed in writing by the Energy Regulator, whose decision will be final.
  • All nominations will be subject to the appropriate level of accreditation. Any failure to pass the accreditation and possible State Security Agency clearance will disqualify the nomination, and the appointment will be declared invalid.

โ Nominations close at 00:59 on 25 July 2025. For further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact the Executive Manager for Electricity Regulation, Mr Rhulani Mathebula, at 012 401 4600 or Rhulani.Mathebula@nersa.org.za
