  • In a landmark effort to bridge the gap between energy access and digital inclusion, MTN South Africa has announced the sponsorship of a micro-grid initiative in Orange Farm, one of the countryโ€™s largest and most underserved township located approximately 45 km from Johannesburg.
  • The project is set to bring renewable energy, internet connectivity, and new economic opportunities to the area, addressing critical socio-economic challenges.

MTNโ€™s sponsorship will see the micro-grid solution being implemented in partnership with Ukukubona connecting 96 homes and switching on the lights for the first time. Ukukubona NPC will supply locally sourced materials for the project, further boosting economic activity in the region. Additionally, the infrastructure will be remotely monitored, ensuring efficient operations and swift maintenance.

With over 70,000 households in Orange Farm, access to affordable and reliable electricity has been a persistent challenge. This initiative not only tackles energy poverty but also integrates internet access, enabling digital inclusion and financial empowerment. Community members will gain opportunities to resell WiFi tokens and electricity, creating new streams of income while promoting local entrepreneurship.

Green Building Africa promotes the need for net carbon zero buildings and cities in Africa. We are fiercely independent and encourage outlying thinkers to contribute to the #netcarbonzero movement. Climate change is upon us and now is the time to react in a more diverse and broader approach to sustainability in the built environment. We challenge architects, property developers, urban planners, renewable energy professionals and green building specialists. We also challenge the funding houses and regulators and the role they play in facilitating investment into green projects. Lastly, we explore and investigate new technology and real-time data to speed up the journey in realising a net carbon zero environment for our children.
