- New smart grid and smart village prototype to supply electricity to more than 700 households, schools and clinics in Limpopo Province, South Africa.
- The project showcases the role of renewable energy and digital infrastructure in rural development.
The Minister of Electricity and Energy Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has officially opened the Madimbo Mabvete Smart Grid and Smart Village prototype in Mabvete, Limpopo. The launch marks a significant milestone in South Africa’s efforts to expand reliable and sustainable electricity access to rural communities.
The Minister was joined by the Limpopo Member of the Executive Council for Economic Development Mr Tshitereke Matibe, who represented the Premier of Limpopo Dr Phophi Ramathuba. Senior government leaders highlighted the project as a practical example of how innovation can be deployed at community level to address energy access challenges.
Once operational, the smart grid will provide electricity to more than 700 households as well as local schools and clinics in the Madimbo and Mavhete area. The project integrates renewable energy solutions with digital infrastructure to improve service delivery, support social development and enable new economic activity.
The initiative positions Limpopo at the forefront of South Africa’s transition to a smart, green and connected economy. It demonstrates how clean energy technologies and intelligent grid systems can improve quality of life while supporting inclusive growth in rural regions.
Under the leadership of Premier Phophi Ramathuba, the provincial government has prioritised sustainable infrastructure, digital inclusion and rural development as central pillars of its current administration. The Madimbo Mabvete project aligns closely with these priorities by creating a scalable model for future rural electrification programmes.
As a national blueprint for smart villages, the project illustrates what can be achieved through collaboration between government, communities and development partners. Limpopo has described the prototype as a living example of how rural areas can participate meaningfully in South Africa’s green and digital economy.
