  • 30 MW solar photovoltaic plant planned to strengthen energy security at Karowe Diamond Mine.
  • Project to include potential 20 MWh battery storage and grid tied or hybrid configuration.
  • Full commercial operation targeted for 2027 or 2028 under long term Power Purchase Agreement model.

Lucara Botswana has issued an Expression of Interest to identify developers for a 30 MW solar photovoltaic plant intended to supply power to its operations at Karowe Diamond Mine. The initiative is designed to improve energy security, reduce operating costs and support the company’s long term decarbonisation pathway as it prepares for a transition to underground mining.

The proposed energy project is expected to be structured as a utility scale development that may be delivered in phases. This could include an initial 10 MW solar installation paired with a 20 MWh battery energy storage system, scaling up to a total installed capacity of 30 MW. The inclusion of storage is aimed at improving supply reliability and smoothing solar variability to ensure consistent power delivery to mining operations.

The plant is expected to be configured as either a grid tied system or a hybrid solution depending on final design and integration requirements. Under the proposed model, the project will be delivered through a long term Power Purchase Agreement in which a private developer designs, finances, builds and maintains the infrastructure.

Commercial operation is targeted for 2027 or 2028, aligning with the mine’s broader development timeline. The clean energy investment is closely linked to Lucara’s underground expansion strategy, which is expected to extend the productive life of Karowe well into 2040.

For Lucara Diamond, the shift toward renewable energy is also a strategic response to exposure to volatile fuel costs and rising electricity tariffs from the grid. By integrating solar generation, the company aims to improve cost predictability while strengthening operational resilience in a highly energy intensive mining environment.

The project further supports environmental, social and governance objectives outlined in the company’s most recent sustainability reporting, particularly around emissions reduction and responsible resource development.

The Expression of Interest is open to independent power producers with demonstrated experience in utility scale solar projects above 20 MW, strong financial capacity and a commitment to local community development. Prequalification submissions are required are set for 10 July 2026.
